Career Connection works with employers to foster an inclusive workforce by hiring people who have an intellectual disability. We work with over 100 employers in Mississauga and the surrounding area who recognize the value in a diverse and inclusive workplace.
In July 2021, Superior Packaging, a partnership business supported by Community Living Mississauga, closed. Richards Packaging, having been a long time business partner with Superior Packaging, was left considering how they would continue to ensure business needs were met with minimal disruption.
Michael Bussiere, Senior Vice President with Richards Packaging, recognized the value the partners at Superior Packaging brought to Richards Packaging’s business and welcomed a conversation on inclusive hiring.
Richards Packaging was connected with Career Connection, Community Living Mississauga’s employment services, and began discussing how the business could pivot and benefit from hiring job seekers who have an intellectual disability. Richards Packaging and Career Connection conducted a tour of the workplace, discussing their business and needs and, to date, 5 employees have been hired within their production team.
Steve Schachter, General Manager, has played a pivotal role in the successful onboarding of the employees. “They are doing an amazing job, always on time, glad to be at work and it’s a pleasure to have these new employees a part of the Richards family,” shares Steve of his experience working with the employees hired through Career Connection.
It is not only the business that has benefitted. The employees hired through Career Connection’s services have smoothly transitioned into paid employment with a business who values them as employees. When reflecting on their experience to date, Teresa shares that “Richards Packaging is a positive place to work” and Joey says “I am enjoying my new position and enjoying working with everyone.”
