Career Connection supports people who have an intellectual disability with their employment goals. Over 13 years ago, Andrew was connected to begin his employment journey.
Andrew’s first job was as a Front End Associate at a Grocery Store in Mississauga. In this position, Andrew proved himself as a productive, committed team player who demonstrated a strong work ethic and a great regard for customer service. After 12 years on the job, Andrew was ready to advance in his career and try something new-specifically identifying working in a warehouse as his goal.
Part of what Career Connection supports job seekers with is job development. Team members not only support job seekers with exploring and preparing for work but also connect directly with employers to showcase the business benefits of inclusive hiring and how hiring a qualified, highly-skilled candidate, like Andrew, can be a mutually beneficial relationship with a multitude of positive outcomes for all stakeholders.
It was Andrew’s strong employment related skills along with an employer connection fostered through Career Connection that supported him to move into his career working as a Warehouse Associate for a logistics company in Mississauga. Andrew proved himself yet again as a professional and strong team player, eventually training new employees as they joined the team.
While Andrew valued his time in this role, eventually it was time to move forward once again. Andrew attended workshops with Career Connection to further develop his soft skills and engaged in meetings with Career Connection to discuss his career advancement and create a vision for his future career. Andrew’s commitment to his career goals was unwavering, even throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, always sharing “I really want to be working.”
With his ambition, Career Connection knew any employer would benefit from bringing Andrew on-board. He was driven, determined, exuded a willingness to learn and an openness for his own growth and development that employers value on their teams.
When Welbilt Canada and Career Connection explored inclusive hiring, Andrew was top of mind as a strong candidate match. Welbilt Canada values what Andrew embodies in an employee. Andrew was hired and quickly became an integral part of the Welbilt Canada team. During his first week, he learned the integral parts of assembling within his role. Andrew mastered each step of every task and when productivity levels were set for the shift, Andrew accomplished 112% by his lunch break.
When asked how he feels about his recent career move into manufacturing and assembly, Andrew says “I’m happy, I’m learning and I’m focused.” Career Connection has been thrilled to be a part of Andrew’s employment journey and career advancement. “Now more than ever, businesses need people (like Andrew) who are ready, willing and able to work. Career Connection is committed to nurturing these results with businesses committed to inclusive hiring throughout Mississauga and the surrounding area,” shares Marissa Marr, Manager with Career Connection.
